1971's 50th Reunion Year ... Continued
Class of '71 Fall Retreat in Princeton, October 15-16, 2021
Program Update 9/10/21
The Planning Group (Hammond, Hittson, Rickerson, assisted by others) meets at least weekly refining the weekend’s details. The program starts in the afternoon on Friday October 15 and “officially” concludes late Saturday night October 16 at our site location of The Tiger Inn, 48 Prospect Avenue, where 1971 has gathered so often in years past. All our cocktail receptions and meals will be at the Clubhouse. It has many rooms and a grand porch and lawn area where Classmates can gather informally.
The primary focus of the Retreat is catching up with roommates, teammates, and friends and meeting some new ones after 18 months of remoteness.
There will be great tours and panels, a Class of 1971 “Celebration of Life” in the Chapel, a Class photo, our own 1971 P-rade, a student a capella group performance, all to transform some of the virtual Reunions programs we had into in-person events at the Fall Retreat. We also have several elements in development that will evolve until the curtain goes up (see below for some highlights).
We even checked with the long-range AccuWeather to see what we might expect in Princeton that weekend. The forecast calls for sunny skies with temperature highs of 72 degrees dropping to seasonable 40’s at night. What more could you ask for?
Early registrations are encouraging. The list of those registered can be viewed on the Class website at this link.
The Early Bird rate closes on September 21 (in less than 2 weeks), and we encourage you to reach out to rally your friends to join you in October. Due to the size of our venue, there is a cap on the number of registrants we can handle. By registering now, your classmate friends can avoid the $71 "late fee" and also get in before we have to shut down registrations due to the size limit.
Program. We selected Tiger Inn as the venue and we will have the property to ourselves as all the clubs will be closed to student and Alumni members for meals and socializing during Princeton’s Fall Break. Your fee includes 2 receptions and 3 quality meals (Friday Opening Reception with “heavy hors d’oeuvres;” Saturday Brunch; and both a Saturday Reception and Dinner). Refreshments are included, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. BYOB is encouraged.
The weekend will include a breadth of content-rich fare conceived and produced by our Class, on the heels of ‘71s award-worthy virtual reunion show. We are planning at least 3 pairs of Class-exclusive events, giving you choices! Some of the events are walking tours, while some will be interactive talks, like precepts. All will be small so you can ask questions if you wish.
There will also be time for you to explore Princeton’s historic Campus and the town on your own if that appeals. There’s also an optional “athletics track,” a chance to see Princeton student-athletes compete at home in field hockey, rugby, soccer. women's ice hockey, women's volleyball, women's tennis, and cross-country, at no charge, including a Sunday game with preseason #10 ranked Tiger field hockey hosting #6 Penn State. You can also watch the away Princeton vs. Brown football game on Saturday on ESPN+ at Tiger Inn if you wish.
Here is some of the tentative programming that is set (or solidifying):
- We have just been given permission to hold a Class of 1971 “Celebration of Life” in the University Chapel on Friday afternoon, only for those who are fully vaccinated (i.e., all registrants). Details to follow once we work them out with the Dean of the Chapel.
- Keynote talk: “The Lives I’ve Told: Writing Biography” with Scott Berg ’71 (Saturday morning)
- 1971 50th Reunion Class Photo, Saturday, 1879 Arch, noon-sharp – wear your 50th Flower Shirt and suitable accessories (Saturday at Noon)
- Class of 1971 50th Reunion P-rade through Campus, Saturday, following the Class Photo (Saturday about 12:30pm)
- “Behind the Curtain at the Tokyo (and other) Summer Olympics,” with Dale Neuberger ’71, interviewed by Rick Ostrow ’71 (Saturday afternoon)
- “Does ‘Free’ Speech Still Exist on Modern Campuses?,” with Kevin Baine ’71 (TBD)
- “The Search for Einstein’s Brain,” with Fred Lepore ’71, author of “Finding Einstein’s Brain” (optional, advance reading for those interested) (Saturday afternoon)
- Terry Pflaumer ’71 and Kathy Moloney ’71, both foreign service veterans, will host a panel on the state of the State Department and the U.S.’s place in a post-Trump world. (Saturday afternoon)
- Dave Chamberlain ’71 will exhibit some of his renowned artwork and discuss the “The Art of Creating Art.” (TBD)
- Orange Key Campus tours (subject to current University rules): We’re developing some behind the scenes tours. Some will take place on Friday afternoon, with the rest on Saturday. Stay tuned.
Class Photo. The 1971 Class 50th Reunion Photo will be taken on Saturday, October 16 at Noon in 1879 Arch. Wear your 50th Shirt! You can pre-order a photo when you register and save since shipping charges will be waived. Our own ’71 P-rade will follow the photo early Saturday afternoon, meandering through Campus from the arch.
Refunds. Recent months brought uncertainty into our lives, and we understand that some may wonder: “What happens if I pay, and this event gets cancelled or if I don’t feel comfortable attending. Will I get my fees back?” The answer is: “Yes”!
Reunion Gear. We designed an iconic, unique, custom 50th Reunion Flower Shirt to mark our milestone year. They are made to be worn often, and not just at Princeton events. The feedback from all who have ordered has been positive, even enthusiastic. We’ve been restocked, and most sizes are available now.
If you still need a shirt, they can be ordered through the website Class Store either for pickup at the Retreat or to be shipped to you beforehand.
We also encourage you to bring and wear any of your Class Reunion badge name tags, to stay in the spirit, and to help those who haven’t seen you in a while strike up conversations. Wear other 1971-branded Reunions clothes and accessories during the Fall Retreat as you will.
Vaccination Honor Code & Public Health Environment. Whatever the situation in your home area is, the Princeton environs seem as safe as any: Princeton students are expected to be 99% vaccinated, faculty and staff will be 99% vaccinated, the venue’s staff is 100% fully vaccinated, and in the town itself (not counting the students and staff) more than 79% of those 12 years of age and over are fully vaccinated as of August 24. Among those our age in town, the vaccination rate is over 98%.
We designed our Retreat’s protocols months ago to meet – and often exceed – the CDC guidelines, Princeton’s and local health authorities. As an extra precaution since many of us are in groups labelled “high risk,” we go a bit farther: all Class registrants and their guests must commit under our Honor Code to receive their final dose of the Covid-19 vaccine at least 2 weeks before the start of the Fall Retreat. This is out of respect for fellow Classmates and their guests. You might bring your vaccination card or a photo of it on you smartphone, as many places in NJ and environs now require it and we may ask you to show it at registration. The “‘71 Honor Code” is consistent with the one we committed to as students more than 50 years ago. 1971 also will require all to wear face coverings indoors regardless of vaccination status, except when eating or drinking (and outdoors where sensible). We also are strongly encouraging all attending to get the annual flu vaccine shot at least 2 weeks before the event. Thank you for your understanding.
Housing. If you need housing, we urge you to make plans. Nearby hotel rooms are available at a range of prices. Check the cancellation clause just in case you change your plans for any reason.
