Class of 1971 52nd Reunion

May 25-28, 2023

Registration Now Open!

Deadline May 17

Dear Classmate,

It’s time to register! Our 52nd Reunion is just around the corner. Building on last year’s theme of “Our 50th Reunion...Continued,” we would like all classmates to feel that “Every year is a Major” Reunion, so we are adding Class-specific events to make this more special than a typical “non-major” Reunion year. We will be a satellite of 1973’s 50th Combine headquartered in the Blair-Joline-Campbell Courtyard, and here’s what’s in store for ’71 so that you can plan to attend any or all during May 25-28!

52nd Reunion Day-by-Day — Event Summary
View complete event information here

Thursday, May 25. Meet and Greet at the 50th Combine (3-5pm), and in the evening, music of our college years and more at the 50th. If we can get enough classmates to return on Thursday, we will have a FREE reception with a light meal at the Class of 1971 Library at Tiger Inn (so stay turned on this).

Friday, May 26. You can start the day with a walk through the Institute for Advanced Study woods, led by expert birder Winnie Spar (no experience necessary). In addition to a slate of Alumni-Faculty Forums, we will sponsor our own panel featuring classmates Kevin Loughlin MD ’71 and Phil Bobbitt JD ’71 with moderator Abigail Evans k’27 k’70 PhD, M.Div. on the timely topic of “Presidential Health and Illness and the 25th Amendment (10-11am). A special organ concert will be held in memory of former Princeton president Robert F. Goheen '40 *48 in the Chapel at 3pm. At 4pm we’ll have an hour-long walking tree tour of campus led by Glenn “Merc” Morris ’72, a master landscape architect and former landscape editor of Southern Living magazine. He’ll point out noteworthy trees and their ties to Princeton’s (or the nation’s) history and the evolution of the campus. At 5:30pm we’ll have our now traditional BBQ, jointly with the class of 1970 in the Holder-Hamilton corridor until 8:00pm ($40/person) with special music by the Tigerlilies. Later, there will be Motown covers by The Right On Band at the 50th sponsored by the 50th Reunion class of 1973.

Saturday, May 27. Saturday will kick off with a chance to loosen up and shed some cobwebs with a Stretching and Mindfulness wellness session at 9am. Prior to the P-rade, we’ll have lunch in the Holder-Hamilton corridor from 12 to 1:30pm. A variety of subs and salads will be catered by D’Angelo Italian (yes, there will be soda, beer, and wine). The lunch is free to all classmates and their guests. Those wishing to carry signs in the P-rade can pick them up at lunch. We’ll then gather for the One and Only P-rade, which launches at 2pm. Wear your 50th Reunion Flower Shirt (and blazer if you like) or whatever past ’71 Reunion garb you wish and join in this celebration of all things Princeton. Our traditional post P-rade reception will again be held at Prospect House starting at 5pm with a full bar and a selection of passed hors d’oeuvres; there is no charge for the reception.  Following the reception, there will be a Class dinner at Prospect beginning at 6pm (cost $100/person). We’ll turn the coffee/tea/dessert half-hour into a coffee house vibe with music by Rob Slocum ’71. Following the Saturday dinner, the University will field its fireworks display from Lake Carnegie. Afterwards music at the 50th Combine will feature Tanyaradzun Tawengwa (African Pop) at 9pm and The Hot Sardines (jazz/pop) starting at 10:15pm.

Here are other important details about the 52nd Reunion:

Guests. Please note, the University is again limiting wristbands for registrants in the satellite classes to the alumnus and one guest this year. A wristband is required to enter major Reunion sites after 5pm. If you are coming as a single and can “donate” your guest slot to another classmate, we can pass that information along, but the class cannot act as a broker. You do not need a wristband for the P-rade or other events outside of the Reunion sites. Classmates can bring multiple family members or guests to the BBQ, Pre-P-rade lunch, the post-P-rade reception, or Class dinner, and alumni forums.

Registration (IMPORTANT). This year registration will consist of TWO parts:

Part 1. Registration for the Class of ’71 events (those listed above) is available on the Class website by clicking on the button below (login required and using a smartphone is not recommended).

Click to register for Class of '71 events

You will be able to choose the Class activities you are attending, make payment for the Friday BBQ and the Saturday dinner, and indicate if you will be in town for a possible Thursday reception.

Part 2. Those wishing to enter any Reunion site after 5pm on any day will need to register on the University system to obtain a wristband. There is no cost to obtain a wristband. Per the University guest policy (above), you may obtain a wristband for yourself as a classmate and ONE guest. Click on the button below and scroll down to the label "10th - 65th Satellite Classes. Then click on it to register. You must use your TigerNet account to login, which is different from the ’71 website login. Instructions on obtaining or recovering your TigerNet access can be found here.

Our Class Honorary Members and Class Associates (widows and widowers) will need to register differently for their wristbands. Please email our Reunion Registration Chair, Alan Usas, at registration@princeton71.org and he will guide you through the process.

Note: If you add a guest after your initial registration as an alumnus, you will also need to update the Class registration for any Class events they are attending; see Part 1 above.

University Reunions Schedule and Information. The full schedule and information about entertainment and campus resources as it becomes available can be found here.

Housing. The University has only allocated us three beds (beds, not rooms) this year so on-campus rooms will likely not be available. If you have a health issue that can be mitigated by having an on-campus dorm room let me know and we can try to intercede with the University. If making hotel reservations (if you have not already done so), make sure to check the cancellation policy. We’ll post the university’s hotel shuttle information as soon as available.

50th Reunion Flower Shirts. Don't have your 1971 Custom 50th Reunion Flower Shirt? Need a new one? We still have a limited number of men’s shirts in sizes S, M, and 3XL but quite a few in all women’s sizes. Get yours for your lady, kids or grandkids before they sell out! You may purchase shirts for delivery at Reunions when you register in Part 1 above or visit the Class Store on the Class website princeton71.org to order and have your items shipped.

Renting Golf Carts. For classmates with mobility issues golf cart rentals are available. These need to be ordered separately with a registration form here. There are also the campus shuttles and the Reunions Rover – the popular student-driven transport services for alumni and guests. Preference is given to those with mobility impairments. The Rovers make continuous intra-campus loops with stops at headquarters sites, parking lots and program locations throughout Reunions weekend.

Cancellation Policy.  Entrance to the 52nd Reunion is FREE for members of the Class of 1971 and a guest, however the BBQ and Saturday class dinner have a charge.  Since we need to give final numbers to our vendors soon, we encourage you to register now if you know your plans. Most importantly, once we give our final head count to food services in May, there are no refunds. The registration and cancellation deadline for the BBQ and Class dinner is May 17.

Take a Bus? Reduce your carbon footprint! The Class of 2018 is organizing Reunions buses for all alumni and their guests to Princeton (and back) from Boston; Washington, D.C. with a potential stop in Philadelphia; and other cities in the Northeast, as requested. Reserve your seat by April 20 at the form here.

Questions. You can find additional information about the 1971's 52nd Reunion including the preliminary schedule of events on our Class website princeton71.org. For general inquiries about the Reunion, please contact Jeff Hammond, Reunion Chair, at reunions@princeton71.org. If you encounter any difficulty with either of the two registrations, please contact Alan Usas, Reunion Registration Chair, at registration@princeton71.org.

I’m looking forward to seeing many of you on campus this May.
